Exuberant colorist, Donnalee Dunne’s green bamboo paintings are tied together by red ribbon. Inflexible, upright branches and soft, pliable bands tie the series of panels into a homogeneous unit. Bright yellow yarn encircles and embraces rocks that float above or lie beneath the blue horizon line. In their suspended state, the rocks defy an established appearance of stability. Projecting from an ornate backdrop, rich in detail and tangibility, the panels enhance the decades old Warnors’ Theatre. Under the blind arches that characterize the facade, windows frame these verdant stalks of bamboo and curious rock formations. Dunne wanted the public to discover this vivid exhibit from both Fulton and Tuolumne Streets as they drove by the building. She hoped to attract people that live and work downtown, perhaps those who had never visited a museum or gallery. Intriguing narrative, tactile surfaces of lively paint and rich color unite to create "Alternative Landscapes: A Bit of Whimsy" in Fresno’s city center. (Gina Strumwasser, Art Historian) |
